Born and raised on the Big Island in Hilo, Kelly has been involved in youth development for over thirty-five years. For decades, she served as an athletic coach. In 2012, Maluo-Pearson was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) after being selected to be a Woodruff Fellow. In December of 2013 and with the support of the Woodruff Scholarship, she earned her master’s degree in human resources management from the University of Hawaii-Manoa.
Amongst her many achievements, Maluo-Pearson graduated from the Hawaii Community Foundation Hawaii’s Emerging Leaders Program, Weinberg Fellows Program and the Non-Profit Executive Leadership Program out of the University of Washington. On August 4, 2017, County of Maui, Mayor Alan Arakawa proclaimed the day Kelly Pearson Day for Kelly’s 20th Anniversary with the organization and her years of service to the youth of the Maui community.
More recently at the 2023 Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Pacific Region Leadership Conference, she was awarded the Blue Spirit Award. According to Jim Clark, President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Blue Spirit Award recognizes leaders who have demonstrated what it truly means to be a Club and community leader and have gone above and beyond to drive impact and make a difference. Clark announced that this award decision was made earlier in the summer but the recent tragic events we have seen on Maui reiterated the decision based on BGCM’s leadership and response to support our youth, families, staff, and community.
